SCVMM 2012R2 Web Access – AKA System Center App Controller

In SCVMM 2008 & 2012 (not including SP1) there was an option to install a web gui which could be used to manage SCVMM. Basically the WEB interface in 2012 was the same as 2008 and was just left as backward compatabbility for customers who were working with the service. As of SCVMM 2012 SP1 the web interface has been killed off.

So whats the replacement? Many customers have complained to me at the lack of the web interface, claiming rightfully so that it was a major part of their private cloud deployment.
The solution is quite simple, install System center 2012R2 App Controller.
System Center 2012R2 App controller is essentially a Web GUI for SCVMM. The interface is perfect for creating, managing and accessing VM’s including delegated access using SCVMM cloud and teneants. App Controleer can also be connected to you Azure subscription. Once connected to an Azure subscription the Web interface can be used to manage both on premises and in Azure cloud VM’s.

App controller is a small (less than 50MB) download, it can be installed on a dedicated server or on the SCVMM server. It of course requires an SQL Server to host its database. I think the most common scenario for installation will be on the SCVMM server, though of course users with large environments may require a dedicated server.
